Accounting School Help Instill Confidence

As seen in The Salt Lake Tribune

Are you tired of the same boring, dead-end job you've had for years? Are you yearning for a career change, but are unsure of which career to pursue or how to make a change? Why not become a bookkeeper or accountant for free?

A report from the U.S. Department of Labor stated that the accounting field is expected to grow 20 percent by 2008, and the profession ranks in the department's top 25 occupations for number of jobs (more than 2 million) and number of job openings (more than 38,000 per year).

The bottom-line is that every business in every industry needs someone with accounting skills.

If you have been planning a career change, now is the time to explore the accounting profession.

Since its establishment in 1979, Universal Accounting Center, through a joint venture with Ajilon, a national accounting staffing firm, has been dedicated to training accountants. The institute trains its students to manage the day-to-day accounting tasks of both large and small businesses, teaching them the skills needed to become successful bookkeepers and accountants.

Allen Bostrom, administrator of Universal's Murray campus, describes the institute's curriculum as being vastly different than what's taught at universities.

"Universities emphasize professional positions in Fortune 500-type companies of the Big 4 accounting firms," Bostrom says. "By comparison, Universal trainins its students to be confident in the practical day-to-day processes of accounting.

"For example, universities all but ignore teaching payroll accounting and the accounts receivables collection processes, while Universal recognizes these function as being critical to the success of any small business, and emphasizes teaching our students how to do them," he says.

Universal's short-term intensive training curriculum is catered toward the working student, offering night and weekend classes.

The curriculum is divided between a number of different courses, with each course designed to give students complete training in a specific type of accounting practice or industry. Most courses are three hours long and are taught by practicing accountants or CPA's.

Universal takes a practical approach in teaching its students accounting principles. during the courses, students will complete accounting books for several businesses, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to learn accounting principles in real-world situations. The accounting courses are open to anyone, regardless of background or previous accounting experience.

Upon completing a course, Universal graduates can expect to receive continued support. For one year, Universal graduates can work with the center's staff to answer any of their accounting questions.

"I was surprised at how much I was able to learn in such a short period of time," says Brett Rich, a Universal graduate. "I was also impressed with the confidence that Ajilon put on me because of my classes. Because of my time with UAC I was able to get a job quickly in accounting."

Ajilon and Universal have joined together to provide a great opportunity for students interested in the short-term intensive training program. Upon completing the course, any Universal graduate who works for one of Ajilon's clients, could receive up to a complete reimbursement for the cost of the course.
