The Professional Bookkeeper (PB) Designation

A small business owner’s success is largely due to the qualifications of those people working for him or her.  From the CEO to the custodian, an unqualified employee can cost a business both time and money.  This is particularly true of a company’s bookkeeper.

Today's universities train individuals in the complexities of audit, tax, and accounting standards for large corporations. Little is taught regarding the day-to-day bookkeeping practices for the small business.  For that reason, an accounting degree has limited value when hiring a candidate for a bookkeeping position.

Furthermore, bookkeepers are taking on more accounting duties for the small business. In the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Bureau of Labor declares that the “Demand for full-charge bookkeepers is expected to increase as they are called upon to do much of the work of accountants.”
