5 Steps in Taking that First Leap of Faith

Many of us dream about starting our own businesses and may even visualize how successful we could become. But that’s where it ends. The logistics, family concerns, the financial risks, can all be paralyzing and make it difficult to move forward. But as Trammell Crow once said, “There’s as much risk in doing nothing as in doing something.” The longer you wait to act, the more likely you’ll stay put- stagnate, unsuccessful, and ultimately, full of regret. Don’t you deserve better than that? Don’t you deserve to live out your dreams?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above than you need to seriously consider taking that first step to start your own accounting practice. It will require that you leave your comfort zone and experience risk, but unless you do you will never achieve your full potential. But how do you endure the discomfort and take the first leap of faith? The following 5 steps will help.

1. Consider your options.

We want to stress the importance of looking before you leap. You must take the time to consider all your options. Will you start part-time, moonlighting in order to grow your client base? Or do you have enough current and potential clients to provide the income necessary to sustain you and your family? Will you work from your home? If so, what will it take to make your office functional? Think through all the possibilities and allow yourself to gravitate towards that which feels doable. But don’t get stuck on this step. Too many do and find themselves plagued with the infamous “paralysis by analysis.” Think it through and move forward to step two.

2. Research the market.

While it’s important to think through your options, they become more defined when you research the market. How many accountants are currently in your area? Can the market sustain another independent contract accountant? Who would your target market even be? What services are currently being offered and how can you capture the market by enhancing yours to beat out the competition? Is there a niche that’s currently being neglected that you could take advantage of? You can improve on your research by actually talking with other accountants, potential customers, and professionals you respect and admire. They can provide valuable feedback that will ultimately inform your final decision. When on this step it’s important to be thorough, but, again, don’t get stuck here. Answer your most pressing questions and move on to step three.

3. Trust your instincts.

Intuition is more valuable than most think. After spending considerable time looking into your options and researching the market, you’ve gotten a good feel for your alternatives. And chances are you feel better about some of them than you do others. This is your chance to trust your instincts. You know what’s best for you and your family more than anyone else. It’s time to listen to that inner voice and act on it.

4. Act.

This can be the most exhilarating and terrifying step. But nothing happens until you act. Once you’ve made your decision it’s time to move forward, learning as you go. But take note, each event and experience is a lesson, and you should learn from them so you can improve your business and your own approach.

5. Evaluate.

The best businesses are those that continually enhance their products and/or services, grow their offerings and improve their marketing efforts. The only way to accomplish that is by evaluating your business. As your own accountant you need to look at your numbers and determine which areas are weak and which are strong. This enables you to make the best decisions for your business, fostering improvement and growth.

A pioneer is described as someone who opens a new area, paving the way for others to follow. We’d like to introduce you to a pioneer accountant you just might be interested in following, Alf Bostrom.

Alf Bostrom

Alf Bostrom was a financial manager who saved many small businesses from economic ruin. Born in 1926, just years before the depression, Alf learned the value of hard work from an early age. At 16 his father died, leaving him to help support his family. Two years later, he joined the Navy and was in the Pacific Theater fighting World War II when Japan signed the peace treaty. His early career was spent in different capacities with various small businesses, learning important principles of business profitability. In the 1960’s, Alf decided to start his own management company.

Of course, starting your own company is a courageous venture, somewhat of a pioneer effort. But his approach was very unconventional. For a percentage of future profits, Alf offered to take over the management of failing businesses. He wouldn’t earn a penny unless the business profited from his efforts. And what business wouldn’t take him up on it? Many were suffering huge losses; some were on the brink of bankruptcy. Alf managed 22 businesses in the course of his career, 8 together at one time. He became known as “The Turn-around King” and learned a thing or two about why small businesses fail and what they can do to succeed.

What is a Pioneer Accountant?
Alf recognized an accounting need that wasn’t being filled. 50% of small businesses fail, and that failure is often attributed to poor financial management. Alf was able to step into those failing businesses and use solid accounting practices to turn them around. He was willing to go into, for the most part, uncharted small business territory and settle some messy accounts. While most were looking for accounting opportunities with larger companies, Alf found great opportunity and satisfaction building his own community by helping small businesses thrive. In fact, many of those turn-around companies are still in business today. Alf was a pioneer accountant.

You can go to a university and be trained in accounting. Unfortunately, you’d only learn about corporate accounting which makes up a small share of the accounting opportunities out there. Where do you find the rest? In small business. Alf continued his pioneer efforts by taking his practical experience and turning it into a small business accounting course. Personal Mission Statement

A Personal Mission Statement: Charting Career Success

Fortune 500 companies, and even little mom and pop shops, compose mission statements to express what their organization does. Once completed, it can enable the organization to make decisions that will help them accomplish their vision and be a good measure of company success. Like any organization, you would like to enjoy success. A clear mission statement can help you express what you hope to become, enabling you to make choices that will get you there, and measure your success once you do.

What is a personal mission statement?

A personal mission statement is a concise and specific declaration of your career goals. It should be no longer than 2 sentences and no more than 30 words. Begin with “My career mission is…” Here are some examples:

My career mission is to become competent in small business accounting in order to help local businesses succeed.

My career mission is to become an accountant specializing in not-for-profit business accounting so I can ensure the success of volunteer organizations.

My career mission is to start my own business as a full-service financial provider to help small businesses thrive and spend more quality time with my family.

Personal Mission StatementWriting a mission statement

It’s one thing to look at a few examples, but how do you compose your own personal career mission statement? First, ask yourself a few questions (and take notes):

  • What natural talents and abilities do I possess?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What do I want to do?
  • What do I value (integrity, passion, relationships, family, etc.)
  • What do I want to contribute?
  • Who do I want to influence?

Once you’ve answered these questions, look over your answers and see what connections you can make between your values, your passions, your talents, and who you would like to impact. Then write a few mission statements and see which appeals to you most. When you’ve decided upon your mission statement, put it somewhere you can read often, and consider how you’re measuring up.

Mission statements should continually evolve

Just because you’ve written it down on paper (even if you’ve embossed it with gold ink), doesn’t mean you can’t continually change your mission statement to reflect your growth and maturity as a person. Perhaps as you begin advancing in your career, you’ll realize that your initial mission statement needed to be influenced by job experience; you may choose to alter your career path because of what you experience on the job.

Regardless of how much it changes, a personal mission statement can help you chart your career path and be more successful.
